Standard-Manuscript Format This sensible overview of how to format an essay for a college course is invaluable. Conventions vary across academic fields and professors will have individual preferences, but this overview and the rationale is invaluable. (A version of this essay was written by a colleague of mine at the University of Washington.)
The Center for Writing We will be working with a Writing Assistant during class, and you will be meeting with our Writing Assistant in the Center. The Center promotes effective writing and thinking by offering a variety of services for students. Schedule a conference at the Center by stopping by the Center located at 81 Blake Street, across from the Science Center parking lot, or by calling 358-2412. Research Guides and Learning Modules The Mason Library offers a significant archive of information for students and faculty in the area of what is often called “information literacy.” Making effective use of the print books and journals and online resources will be much more efficient (and enjoyable) with the help of these materials.
Primary Source Learning Opportunities The archives house materials related to Social Justice, Civil Rights, Women’s History, Modern Poetry, Holocaust Studies, New Hampshire History, and Indigenous Studies (Orang Asli). Research sessions that instruct students on how to use and research primary source materials can be arranged by contacting the Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, Rodney Obien, or by calling 358-2717
Information Literacy Information literacy is the ability to think critically about information. Information literacy also includes the ethical use of information, an essential concept to maintaining academic integrity. The information literate student is able to:
- Identify & refine the information need
- Develop appropriate methods and effective strategies to search for and access information
- Critically evaluate information sources in order to identify the appropriate use of information
- Use information effectively to create and communicate their projects or performances
- Use information ethically and legally and accurately document their use of information sources.
